The drug is a prodrug and is activated in the acidic environment of the secretory tubules in the parietal cells. It reduces basal and stimulated secretion regardless of the nature of the stimulus. Prescribed in case of erosive ulcerative diseases of the gastrointestinal tract and eradication of Helicobacter pylori in infected patients with gastric and duodenal ulcer.

Prilosec Product Description

Drug Uses

Prilosec is a proton pump inhibitor, which blocks the final step of acid production and is used to treat symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease. Prilosec is prescribed to elderly and adult patients for treatment of:

stomach or duodenal ulcers
gastroesophageal reflux disease
pathological hypersecretory conditions
ulcers caused by infection with bacterium Helicobacter pylori

Prilosec demonstrates high efficacy in treatment of gastric and duodenal ulcers, caused by nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs in adults and elderly patients. Due to the high safety profile, Prilosec can be used for treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (such as heartburn and erosive esophagitis) in pediatric patients aged above 1 year.

For treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease in adults and elderly patients, the recommended dose of Prilosec may vary between 20-60 mg per day. A daily dose of Prilosec for a child is adjusted according to his weight. A children dose of Prilosec may vary from 5 to 20 mg.

Missed dose

Take a missed dose of Prilosec, as soon as you remember. But if it's time for the next dose of proton pump inhibitor, do not take it. And after the next dose intake, return to the regular dosing schedule of Prilosec.

More Information

For treatment of ulcers caused by Helicobacter pylori, Prilosec can be used in combination with antibiotics (clarithromycin, amoxicillin). In case if the patient takes Prilosec with antibiotics, he or she is recommended to adhere to the dose regimen during the entire course of therapy and do not stop taking the proton pump inhibitor, even after signs of successful treatment.

For convenient application of Prilosec in children and in patients who usually fail to swallow a whole capsule of Prilosec, oral suspension Prilosec is recommended, which should be prepared immediately before administration.

Storage
In order to protect Prilosec capsules from moisture, they should be stored in a tightly closed container at room temperature not exceeding 30°C.

Prilosec Side Effects

Prilosec is normally well tolerated, sometimes may cause mild adverse effects, which do not require withdrawal of treatment. The most common adverse effects of Prilosec include diarrhoea, inflammation of the tongue, headache, abdominal pain, epigastric pain, constipation, flatulence, and nausea (vomiting). In rare cases, Prilosec may cause: blurred vision, agitation, aggression, leukopenia, intolerance, hyponatremia, joint pain, hepatic failure, or bronchial spasm. Some children aged from one to 16 years may experience respiratory system events and fever.
