Prednisone is a synthetic corticosteroids used for the treatment of rheumatic diseases, severe allergies, various inflammatory conditions and leukemia. Assigned inside; The side effects are the same as in cortisone. Prednisone is a drug from the group of hormones of the adrenal cortex (glucocorticosteroids). It contains the substance prednisolone.

Indications

Prednisone is prescribed to patients according to the following indications:

Bechterew's disease.
Inflammation of the spinal cord and membranes.
Non-infectious arthritis.
Edematous processes of vertebrae and its structures.
Osteoarthritis.
Pronounced soreness in the spine.
Injuries to the joints and nerves of the spine.
Osteochondrosis.
Absence of efficiency from treatment of a backbone other medicines.
Hypertonic disease.
Disease of Itenko-Cushing.
Allergy to the drug and its components.
Tuberculosis.
Nephritis.
Pregnancy (especially up to 12 weeks).
Lactation period.
Obesity.
Increased brittleness of bones.
Increased body hair in women.
Violation of the menstrual cycle.
Ulcers in the digestive tract.
Increase in blood sugar.
Violation of the sexual function.
Adrenal insufficiency.

Prednisone should be taken orally, swallowing a whole and with enough water. Initially, the drug should be taken at 20-30 mg per day until the therapeutic effect (improving the patient's condition). Then gradually reduce the dosage to 5-10 mg per day. In extreme cases, the initial dosage can be increased to 50-100 mg per day, and up to 15 mg per day. The maximum daily dosage is 100 mg, single dose is 15 mg.

The course of treatment is individual and varies from 1 week to several months.

Safety information

The risk of overdose increases with prolonged use. Symptoms of overdose: increased blood pressure, peripheral edema, increased side effects of the drug. Treatment of acute overdose: immediate gastric lavage or induction of vomiting, no specific antidote was found. Treatment of chronic overdose: should reduce the dose of the drug.

The medicine should be stored in a place protected from light.

Contraindications

Prednisone is contraindicated in the following diseases:

During pregnancy this remedy can be appointed very rarely, as the impact on fetus can not be predictable. Prednisone must be abandoned during the period of lactation.

The drug is prescribed only under the strict supervision of a doctor and in extreme cases for children from 3 years.

Alcoholic drinks do not have an influence on the effect from Prednisone.

Interaction with other substances:

The drug reduces the effectiveness of insulin, oral hypoglycemic and hypotensive drugs, anticoagulants;
Reduces the concentration of salicylates in the blood;
Reduces the concentration of praziquantel in the blood serum.
Rifampicin, phenytoin, barbiturates weaken the effect of prednisone;
Hormonal contraceptives increase its effectiveness.

Side effects

Among the most common side effects of Prednisone can be identified:

Obesity.
Increased brittleness of bones.
Increased body hair in women.
Violation of the menstrual cycle.
Ulcers in the digestive tract.
Increase in blood sugar.
Violation of the sexual function.
Adrenal insufficiency.

If such symptoms occur, it is necessary to take symptomatic medications, as far as possible to reduce the dosage of Prednisone as much as possible or to cancel its reception.
