Drug uses

Adalat is recommended to treat adult patients characterized by calcium atoms flow from the extracellular compartment to the artery cells associated with serious cardiac and vascular pathologies, such as:

• Disorders in the blood flow to the left atrium
• High blood pressure in the vessels

The mechanism of Adalat action involves relaxation of the blood vessel walls and blood flow improvement. Adalat is characterized by the fact that this anti-hypertensive agent does not affect a heartbeat.

An adequate drug application reduces pain feeling in the chest. To protect the heart, the large and small arteries, 20 and 40 mg of Adalat should be taken daily divided in two or three doses. Gradually, the daily Adalat dosage can be increased to 80 mg equally separated.

The dosing regimen is required to be adjusted under the combined treatment of hypertension, cerebrovascular disease, and low body weight.

Missed dose

Adalat pills should be taken with 2-3 hour gap between doses. If the patient takes drug 2-3 times a day at equal intervals, minor changes in the dosing regimen are allowed. If the pill intake was missed, and it is the time for the next dose, the missed pill is better to be skipped.

More information

Grapefruit juice can significantly change (increase) the pharmacodynamic properties of Adalat, so it is not recommended while taking this antihypertensive agent.

Storage

Calcium channel blocker Adalat should be stored in its original package at room temperature up to 30°C. Do not use broken or crashed pills. Protect from moisture and direct sunlight.

Warnings

Some categories of patients should take antihypertensive agent Adalat with extra caution, like, for example, the seniors, or patients with metabolic disorders (diabetes) and liver diseases (hepatitis, Budd-Chiari syndrome, and steatosis). Adalat use with drugs affecting the blood pressure (for example, Prozac, Synercid, Tagamet, and Eryc) may require the dosing regimen to be adjusted.

Adalat Side Effects

All adverse reactions caused by Adalat action are mild and not threatening to the patient’s health. The most common adverse reactions arisen from the use of the antianginal drug include malaise, headache, dizziness, edema, fatigue /asthenia, vasodilation, nausea, and constipation.

Sometimes such adverse reactions as mood changes, paranoid syndrome, taste perversion, anemia, arthritis, fever, nervousness, and syncope are reported as well. Few cases of gynecomastia and angioedema have been revealed in elderly patients.

Rare adverse reactions after the antianginal drug therapy were reported according to post-marketing experience. Actually, all of them were insignificant and passed in a while. Some patients taking Adalat are reported to experience irritation of the stomach and insomnia.
